Abstract: We develop general mathematical tools to study the propagation of waves on Riemann-Cartan backgrounds in a way as model-independent as possible. Using this, we prove that torsional backgrounds can induce anomalous propagation of amplitude and polarization and assess whether it could allow using gravitational waves as a probe to detect torsion.
